Electric Car Owners Miss Out on Huge Savings

A recent study highlights that a large number of electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the UK are losing out on significant savings by charging their vehicles during peak hours instead of cheaper, off-peak periods. Despite over a million EVs now being on the road, 78% of drivers report charging at times that lead to higher electricity costs.

Around 30% of EV owners typically charge between 6 pm and 9 pm, and another 26% from 9 pm to midnight. In contrast, only 16% take advantage of the most cost-effective window—between midnight and 6 am. Many drivers also face additional expenses by not pre-scheduling charging sessions and missing out on specialized EV tariffs, with some opting to use more expensive public charging stations.
Confusion and Barriers to Switching Tariffs
Many EV drivers are still not subscribed to specialized tariffs. Nearly a third haven't switched, with some citing confusion over which tariff to choose, and others reporting compatibility problems with home chargers. Others are deterred by the perceived hassle of switching suppliers, despite searching for better deals.
Demand for Bundled Services and Trusted Advice
Bundled utility services—like combining energy with broadband or insurance—appeal to 67% of EV drivers. Personal recommendations also play a vital role, with 52% saying they trust advice from family members and 47% from friends. In comparison, only 38% are influenced by consumer advocates on TV, and just 26% follow advice from social media influencers.
This data highlights the need for clear, easy-to-understand tariffs and seamless switching processes to help EV drivers save more on their charging costs.
